In 1978, Chris Evert lost her diamond bracelet during a U.S. Open match.

Play was temporarily halted.

The idea of the Tennis Bracelet was born, and it became a part of our fine jewelry lexicon. For decades, Chris has not been part of merging this origin story to a Tennis Bracelet Collection.

Our Story

DISCOVER

The history of the tennis bracelet begins in 1978 at the U.S. Open in New York. Tennis champion Chris Evert was playing a match on center court when her diamond line bracelet fell from her wrist. She asked that play be halted until she found the bracelet. %expanded-mobile%

The bracelet with a single row of diamonds then became a part of jewelry folklore. From that moment, the traditional diamond bracelet became known as a tennis bracelet or more specifically, a diamond tennis bracelet. %expanded-desktop%

As more and more jewelers reacted to this popular culture sports moment and created their own versions of this style, the women’s tennis bracelet, or more pointedly the women's diamond tennis bracelet would become an everyday part of many women's jewelry boxes. When featured with diamonds, these gold diamond tennis bracelets took on a variety of design variations. The white gold diamond tennis bracelet became a core design within those collections. For over forty years, Chris Evert was not involved in creating a diamond tennis bracelet collection even though her story was the founding moment for this now iconic style. In 2022, Monica Rich Kosann and Chris Evert joined together to create the Tennis Bracelet – CE, a collection of bracelets inspired by that founding moment. Born 1978, Finally Authentic. Each bracelet in the collection, bears unique design elements that evoke that day in 1978. In her recollections of the day, Chris Evert recalled the green court, the white lines and the sweat of competition. With that in mind each bracelet of the first collection, features a row of diamonds (or white sapphires in silver), a green emerald or tsavorite to represent the green court and a pear shaped diamond or white sapphire to recall the bead of sweat. These signature elements, along with a certificate of authenticity that accompanies each style, establish this as a long overdue diamond tennis bracelet collection that truly is Finally Authentic.

Tennis Bracelet CE FAQs

How do I pick the right tennis bracelet?

At Monica Rich Kosann, our tennis bracelet collection was born from a very specific moment in time inspired by Chris Evert’s legendary match when the original “tennis bracelet” became part of history. We created the collection in collaboration with Chris Evert so by choosing one of our styles, you are selecting a piece that is truly part of the Authentic origin story.

Each design reflects that heritage, from emerald “green court” settings to white diamond “lines of play,” and a signature pear-shaped diamond dripping with movement. Choose a piece that doesn’t just sparkle, but one that’s Finally Authentic™ and part of your story.

How should you wear a tennis bracelet?

Wear your tennis bracelet solo for a stand-alone moment, or stack it with bangles, a watch, and cuffs for a layered look. Tennis bracelets transition seamlessly from day to night, casual to formal. It’s the kind of piece you never need—or want—to take off. When your bracelet is on your wrist it should move naturally, almost like a second skin.

Can I take a shower with my tennis bracelet on?

While Monica Rich Kosann designs pieces for everyday wear, it’s never a bad idea to remove your tennis bracelet before showering. Soaps, shampoos, and hard water can dull the shine over time. To preserve its sparkle and integrity, remove it during bathing, swimming, or heavy activity—your bracelet will thank you.

Should a tennis bracelet be gold, silver, or platinum?

There’s no single “should.” It comes down to your style and how you plan to wear it. Gold offers warmth and usually pairs nicely with heirloom pieces. Silver is great for those who favor cooler tones. Let the metal reflect your personal story.
