It has been traced to ancient Egypt, was prized in China thousands of years ago and has had special meaning going back centuries in Native American cultures throughout North America. It is largely found in dry, warmer climates, so it is no surprise that it was a big part of our own Southwestern and Native American cultures. %expanded-desktop%

This December stone is prized for deep rich colors of its namesake name. The stone also comes with spider web like areas of blackish- brown that are known as matrix. While not considered as valuable as the pure rich solid color, turquoise stones with matrix are still highly prized by those who enjoy turquoise jewelry. This December gemstone is not like other gemstone as it is opaque, so it will not have the translucent sparkle of stones like emerald, ruby, or sapphire. You can find turquoise in our December birthstone necklace, a small crescent moon accented with turquoise cabochon stones, Turquoise is most often cut as a cabochon due to its opaque solid color. These cabochons can be used in any matter of December birthstone jewelry. Turquoise for many years came from Arizona, with the most famous mine there being known as the Sleeping Beauty mine. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise was especially appreciated for its rich color, but the mine is now closed, and those stones are hard to find.
